To catch you up on what's been going on:
Fall 2010: Lois visited the Family Health and Birth Center (http://www.yourfhbc.org/) in Washington DC. This was a helpful and inspiring meeting. She met with the director of their lactation program and one of their midwives who was very encouraging.
November 2010: Lois attended the American Association of Birth Center's (http://www.birthcenters.org/) workshop on starting a birth center as a developing birth center member.
January 2011: Lois met with Betsy Leiphold, Joan Brenner and Carolyn Burtner - a nurse and two certified nurse-midwives who ran the Rochester Birthplace from 1993 until its closing. They provided Lois with a lot of helpful information as well as the materials they had saved from the opening of the Rochester Birthplace.
February 2011:
-Lois VanTol and Katherine met with Diony Young - editor of Birth magazine - in Geneseo, for some advice and resources on getting started.
-Lois met with a former medical director of the Rochester Birthplace to get information about the history of the opening and closing of The Rochester Birthplace. It seems the overall reason for closing the RBP was financial; not due to bad outcomes, safety concerns, or quality concerns.
